I tried to get an appointment with unity point health just to be EVALUATED to be seen by a therapist and they said they only take walk ins and that there was no way to schedule an appointment. They are only open on weekdays. I am only off on Tuesdays. I would have to come in once a week for months and PRAY that they happen to have an opening just to determine, yup i need therapy. When I asked the receptionist if there was any way to schedule an appointment for evaluation, they said that they were like ‘greatclips’ and that ‘you can’t expect to just get a haircut right away’. Yeah waiting to get help for my rapidly deteriorating mental health is just like waiting to get a hair cut.

I’m quite unhappy with this place... I go there for insurance reasons, but I just called in, spoke to someone, they transferred me to a nurse (who they knew would be out), and then I left a message. I then tried recalling so I could talk to that same person and all of a sudden I go straight to voicemail, saying “they are closed”.. this all happened within 2 min, and I didn’t receive the care or respect I needed.
I also feel that they are not evaluating myself correctly. Or at least haven’t been. I’ve also had several mishaps with prescription fill ups, they’ve been wrong on several times. Also I can never seem to get in sooner than 4 weeks out.. I feel like I need to come in sooner, especially if the nurse recommends that, but the front desk says no your going to have to do another in 4-5 weeks...
I’m a very reasonable person and I put up with mishaps and unfortunate events all the time. I will be continuing care there but I thought I should share this.

I have been to this facility on three separate occasions in an attempt for treatment towards my depression. All I can say is that if you can afford anything better, please do that instead, as this place clearly gets its money from court ordered programs and the staff show a total lack of interest.

In my first visit for my evaluation, the first problem I encountered was that the receptionist was disgustingly sick, to the point where she absolutely should not have been working that day. She openly spoke to a colleague, waiting room full, about how she had pink eye, cough, and a debilitating cold. On another visit, 6 weeks later, I arrived 20 mins early to my appointment and waited for 15 until the receptionist showed
up to the main desk, I could hear her talking and laughing with a colleague in the back.

When I went to see the therapist on two different visits (two separate therapists, one an older man, one an older woman) I couldn't help but feel they were both more depressed than I was, and did not care whatsoever, or perhaps had heard so many terrible things throughout the years that it had effected them emotionally. In any case, neither had any enthusiasm whatsoever and I felt as though I was being put into a therapy machine, their approach felt so formulaic and uninspired. After deciding to opt out of therapy, I made an appointment to see the psychiatrist.

She was booked 6 weeks out so it was quite a wait, but that's not her fault. One thing that did make me fairly upset was that upon entering for my appointment, they tell me as I come in that I am not meeting with an actual person but rather am talking through a Skype feed to the psychiatrist who is in Florida. I personally feel that someone might like to have this information beforehand and I can see a person with mental illnesses being very discouraged by not having a physical doctor present. It's just a very impersonal way to have an appointment.

Don't go here unless you have to. The staff are sub par at best, and it is hardly professional in it's approach. I get the impression that things have been sliding in this direction for quite a while and from what I've read about the Des Moines branch, they pay their lower staff members very little while the upper levels make the majority of money. If you need medication, it might be worth it, but if you want a therapist who cares, I suggest other options.

The staff is very rude. The male that you see over video chat for any medication (which is extremely uncomfortable) is very mean. He does not care if you get treated he does not care if you feel safe and trust him. I'm not sure why these people chose to work in the mental health field when they don't have ANY empathy. They act as if it is an inconvience for you to be seen and they said to me that I should go to another place because frankly they are too busy. If you want to be treated like a human being do not go to this place even for a walk in. Oh and if you have an appointment at 10:15 and you show up at 10:15 prepare to be yelled at for being 15 minutes late, they want you there 15 minutes early every time apparently so if you aren't there at 10 even though your appointment card says 10:15 you are late. I've been receiving treatment for depression for 9 years and I have NEVER been treated so poorly by ANY healthcare professional (non mental health doctors and staff included) save yourself time and go somewhere else.

Love going here to see my psychiatrist! Recently, they changed their phone systems so it makes it harder to get in touch to make/change an appt.

I would give ZERO stars if I could! The video Dr there is a joke! Rude and inconsiderate, NOT the place to go for "help".
