Prior to visiting the school in 2017, I had studied for 7 years at another Wing Chun school that was a modified system of the Ip Man branch. I was disheartened by the lack of actual fighting experience I was receiving at this school and left to look for other schools to continue my training. I called around to different boxing gyms and MMA schools but none of them felt like the right fit for me. After some time, I found Tom Wong Wing Chun. Skeptical from my past experience, I gave Sifu a call and set up a time where I could join a beginner class to see if their Wing Chun was any different.

That first class was a total shock to me. I sparred with several of the beginner students that day and was completely unable to defend myself from their flurry of quick and well-placed punches. I spent the whole time retreating and covering up. It was embarrassing! Their Wing Chun was very different. I felt an energy that day that I had never felt before. It was a powerful and adaptive energy. One that I’ve heard so many practitioners talk about, but one that I still had never really experienced. I signed up that day and I’ve been a student with Sifu Tom Wong now for 4 years. After only a few months of studying there, I sparred a karate black belt who had come to the school to challenge. I realized that in that small amount of time training with Sifu, I was able to execute the few fundamentals he had taught me and I did really well. Sifu Tom Wong is a true kung fu master and an amazing teacher. He can take any student and train them to be a good fighter in a short amount of time.

Before coming to this school, I had several years of Taekwondo and Hapkido training beforehand. By far this is the most practical training and Sifu Wong is the best teacher in helping to understand what Kung Fu entails as an ancient Chinese MMA. He also shows what a huge difference the Taoist approach to training is compared to the many Shaolin based styles.

Instead of preset routines, we learn the meaning of adaptability through the changes in sparring, and trying to apply a single technique in different situations before moving to the next. We also learn about handling the full range of combat from kicking to grappling. He also guides us on internal health through chi gong and diet among the many different aspects of becoming a complete martial artist.

Sifu is a walking example of how one can be truly relaxed but strong, and this can be seen in his speed control. I’ve also never seen anyone move that fast, as someone from outside the school once challenged Sifu to spar, and before the guy moved a centimeter, Sifu hit him more than 5 times in less than a second! The guy was completely stunned and was done for the day. Yet in practice Sifu can still hit us while going slow. It’s mind boggling to say the least.

I am very lucky to have been introduced to this school from a friend who had been in the Marines. He told me it was super legit and very different. He was totally right!

I have put some honest efforts in other renown martial art disciplines in the past. Although somewhat proficient, I have reached a plateau and found myself reaching out for more knowledge to fill the holes with my skillsets. Fortunately, I found Tom Wong Wing Chun and got to experience Taoist philosophy in action. It was shocking to discover that many beginner class students could already apply some “internal” elements into sparring. Moreover, some of the more advance students developed such sensitivity that they do not need to rely on speed to fight effectively.
Grandmaster Tom Wong covers a variety of in-depth knowledge regarding training, application, strategy in combat, health, and so much more to supplement our development. I find it particularly helpful to receive constructive feedbacks from supportive classmates and Grandmaster Tom Wong himself. Because the trainings here prepared me physically and intellectually to adapt to my opponents better, I now have multiple options to apply every single technique, which greatly expanded my arsenal and helped me push past my plateau. This system is intricate and practical; I can now see that there is much room for me to progress.

I've been training in martial arts for several years prior to coming here. I first corresponded with Sifu Wong roughly 6-7 years ago and my biggest regret was not starting then. There is so much depth and knowledge that even the beginners class, through my experience, is more advanced then other schools so-called advance class. Everything here is real - the history, lineage and legendary fighters. The way Sifu trains us is real. He makes us understand what we are doing and why. I am so fortunate to be studying under Sifu Wong. Current new students who come here, with no martial arts background, don't realize what they stumbled across - a rare gem and that is Sifu Wong.

Sifu’s teaching is very different from many other martial arts systems that I have experienced by emphasizing building a solid foundation on some “simple” and “easy” moves. It is key and essential towards a more advanced understanding of the whole Wing Chun system. Finally I have found a path to become a real Kung Fu master.

This is truly a wonderful Wing Chun class geared towards students looking to dive into the practical aspects of the inner style of martial arts. Unlike many other gyms that focus on cardio kick boxing you get to learn how to apply Chinese boxing techniques during every lesson by pairing up and using gear. It is a wonderful welcoming environment for everyone and sparring with good caring folks really helps build your skills quickly and effectively!

Learning from Sifu Wong has been an amazing journey. The most memorable moment for me was whenever Sifu would demonstrate moves on me. From his front kick, side kick, to sparring with him. Each moment shows a great depth of knowledge and experience that I am grateful to be a part of and learn.

When Sifu demonstrated the front kick to the class, I saw how quick and powerful it was. It showed that Sifu was not just for show but authentic to its core. When Sifu performed the side kick while I was holding the kicking shield, it was a completely different feel compared to others. Even though it was a demonstration kick with the kicking shield, I still had the air knocked out of me. It was this moment, I realized the proof of Sifu's training and how important it is.

One of the most memorable moment I had was when I had the opportunity to spar Sifu. Although I felt as if I was quick, I was only able to keep up with Sifu for a few punches. Through those few punches, I knew Sifu had already trapped me in a vulnerable position and all I could do was block the flurry of punches. As I continue to learn from Sifu, the more I can see how he was able to trap me and put me in that situation.

My experience at this school was life changing. This school is rich in history and knowledge in martial skills including internal health. Ive experienced martial arts and fighting ever since childhood, but discovered there are so many things I never knew existed after studying under Sifu Tom Wong. The knowledge and skills taught at this school is the most practical for combat at all ranges including ground skills ive never seen before. Im honored to study here. Its the real thing.
