After spending about 4 years in weekly therapy with Russell Thye I believe he is highly skilled with diagnoses and in understanding the nature of mental health issues. I felt he was well versed in getting to the root of the problem. However I would absolutely NOT recommend him for couples therapy or grief counseling. In my experience he approached the latter with a gross lack of compassion and sensitivity and even resorted to raising his voice at me. After approaching him with my concerns no ownership was taken, he became defensive and reluctant to apologize. I highly suspect he may have underlying insecurities concerning the effectiveness of his skillset in addressing interpersonal issues, thus lashing out and becoming hypercritical. In my opinion he forgot the humanity and individual behind the disorders he was treating.

First, I have to say, I'm in awe of this man. I went to his clinic because I'm applying for disability, so S.S.I. & S.S.D.I. set up an appointment to evaluate me based on my disability claim.
I had a VERY BIG chip on my shoulder. I really thought he was going to pick me apart and basically lie for the State, because that IS who hired him aaand that's who's PAYING him... right?
Wow... no... he heard me... he put me at ease... and I ended up asking him if he was accepting Medicaid patients, and... holy crap! He said YES! I'm making an appointment tomorrow!
Please understand that I am NOT easily impressed. I've been seeing psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists, and regular therapists starting at the age of 10, so, 30 years of experience is typing away this message because just ONE meeting with this cat MOVED me... ... not only to get ME to make an appointment, but to allow the fact that I have mental health issues be advertised for the world to see, when I am a VERY private person, to tell you that your search for a psychologist may very well stop here!
If you've had negative experiences with other professionals in the past, as I HAVE had, {including having nearly died from taking a medication prescribed to me, that I was both deathly allergic to, but also prescribed a TOXIC amount of} this guy is worth it, man, he really is. My husband also really liked him. He is a LOT SMARTER, & certainly MORE INFORMED & MORE EDUCATED than MOST of the professionals I've seen, and that is a VERY long list!
I hope my review helps you in your decision! Make that appointment with confidence! I'll leave another review after seeing him for a few months, for a broader perspective! Just please remember, yes, it IS scary, and yes, sometimes it DOES hurt... ... but it is ALWAYS more important to be happy, than it is to be right... If you've ever thought you need help... you probably do. 😉
