I spent 3 hours on the phone between the medi cal benefits and Covered CA to ensure my daughter had coverage since I apparently make too much prior to all my taxes coming out and monthly bills don't matter to the real income you're left over with.. the woman I "worked with" to try and find alternate coverage for my daughter with was rude and couldn't be bothered, she only lightened up when she realized she made an error keeping my daughter on medi cal when I updated my application months ago. I explained it was difficult getting a hold of them because we work the SAME hours during the week. I had called and left messages before they finally called me back and their definition of successfully attempting to reach me is bombarding me with 4 calls in a row the same day while I'm in a work meeting and can't pick up but this woman was angry because apparently she tried contacting me many times that day and was flustered I didn't call right away. Maybe do what other businesses do and realize people's work schedules don't revolve around yours- take the time to call once once a day or every couple days to reach someone- don't bombard them with 4 to 5 calls IN A ROW the same day and then leave it at that. This place doesn't have the time to actually help families, they just clock in for their paycheck and leave it at that.

+5 stars for cheyenne who answered my questions and helped me look into my case. she was empathetic, informative, and efficient. spoke kindly and gently as well as was very understanding - which is how the clerks should be.

to the older lady with the glasses listening in over her shoulder - take some lessons from cheyenne in customer service. you’re rude, abrasive & condescending. you don’t need to cut people off and speak down on people because they’re asking questions. even if the questions are being repeated as most people coming in are going through hardships, or are disabled. god forbid you are ever in that position. -5 stars for you.

balancing out at 3.

The only reason I gave 3 stars to this review, is when I've finally got through to speak with a human at HHS, they've been sincere in their desire to help. I don't see the staff as the root cause of the department's inefficiencies, it's the lack of proficient upper management.

The BenefitsCal website is supposed to be the holy grail of self-service, however it's only as good as the information provided by Nevada County HHS. For two years now, I've submitted countless requests to Nevada County HHS, and the BenefitsCal site to have incorrect information fixed. It's still not fixed, thus I continue to receive documentation that's grossly invalid.

Within California, Nevada County HHS is one of a few counties that has only one method to communicate with staff... by phone. The call system menu takes one from being on hold for up to 20 minutes, only to be automatically disconnected by the HHS telecom system. I don't understand why they won't, or can't, set up email as a way to communicate with HHS staff... it's insane.

Every time I call they are impatient unhelpful or unavailable. They don't want me to have access to my benefits and are unwilling to accommodate.

There have been a few hiccups lately, but the majority of the people there are kind and helpful. It is a great place to find, receive, and be directed toward resources in Nevada County.

It's absurd how much quicker it is to physically go to social services than to call them and be put on hold. Does nobody answer the phone there or what?
