My favorite part of the Sierra. Definitely the best as far as the lakes and hikes go and the broad panoramas you get frequently from the peaks peer all the way into Yosemite. Don't deny yourself some time up in the backcountry.

Just the name itself drives imagery that is ubiquitous with light pouring over beautiful scenery. That's exactly what you will find throughout the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Everything from towering mountains to alpine lakes creating silhouettes of the same jagged mountains. Beautiful meadows, wildlife, even solitude if you're willing to put in the time to hike. Don't delay or your body may not make it into the beautiful backcountry.

Dear outdoor adventurers and true wilderness enthusiasts, pay NO attention to the one and two star ratings here. I gave it only a five because I couldn't give it a six. The only person with a valid comment was Elaine when she chided those others for wondering why there were no bathrooms. The answer is, of course, to keep those folks out. This area is simply GORGEOUS; and is located on the backside of the Yosemite Valley. And while Yosemite may have the tourist photo ops (along with all the tourists,) this area was named after Ansel Adams because it was his favorite place to go! That should tell you something. The low raters are not outdoors people, and their ratings should not be factored into your decision regarding whether or not to visit. If you want to see some of the most beautiful, rugged, pristine mountain hiking available, GO! You won't regret it.

I spent 6 days here in 2011, it was beautiful and majestic. Started at Rush Creek, up past Gem Lake and camped at Alger Lakes cirque for two nights, 2nd day hiked up Koip Peak and across to Kuna Peak, back to Alger. Next night at Davis Lakes, got cold early, wide open views north. Cross country up to frozen Lake Catherine for pictures, then down to Thousand Island Lake for 3rd night. Passed spectacular Garnet Lake and up Minaret Creek to Ediza, where the mosquitos were gnarly, and MT Ritter is a prominent centerpiece. The Minarets are spectacular. Descending Minaret Creek, you leave the sheer granite behind, but there are some cool junipers as you approach the San Joaquin headwaters. The mountains feel a little more compressed here compared to the southern Sierra, and I think their beauty is more concentrated accordingly

pretty. unfortunately my trip was ruined when i dropped all my trail mix in the water when an animal attacked me. will not come back i can't risk losing my food.
