I’ve been attending counseling here since around August of this year. I’ve had nothing but great experiences here. Pearl Cohen has help me tremendously with working through my issues. She was very kind, and a great listener of my problems. I’m very grateful for her and all the staff at positive change. If you looking for a starting point or a new counseling center this one is highly recommended. Thanks to all the staff from the billing department and my Therapist Pearl. Thank all of yall so much for helping me get started on my Journey to a better life. I’m very grateful to have found yall.

The therapist I began to see at Positive Change was helpful and friendly, my negative feedback is about the company and their policies, and not about her.

I saw my therapist twice and then was out of town for a few weeks. My next appointment with her was scheduled for the day after I was supposed to fly back to California. My flight was cancelled the day before, and I called Positive Change twice (who did not answer the phone), left a message, and wrote to my therapist in the client portal. Unfortunately, my message was received just two hours short of their 24 hour cancellation deadline, after which you are charged a $95 late fee. As all the sessions were teletherapy, I was still able to attend the appointment online from a quiet corner of the airport, but would be traveling back to California. I was denied services given I was not in the state of California and there was no flexibility on the late fee. Alas, I never had my third therapy session, and had to pay $95 instead of what I would have paid for a session (a $20 co-pay). As a student living in California, this charge really stung. (As an aside, my university does not provide long-term student therapy services

I understand there is some ambiguity in the law regarding seeing a client for therapy when they are out of state, but some California therapy providers will still see you when you are out of town, given you sought services in and are a resident of California. Be sure to understand when looking for a therapist what their cancellation policies are, whether they are flexible with unforeseen circumstances, and whether they will talk to you when you are out of state.

To be fair, we have not had a single session with Positive Change but that is because their scheduling system is an absolute nightmare. All communication is done over email. If you call, you never get a call back, only emails. We’ve had 2 appointments canceled over paperwork issues that could have easily been resolved if I’d had access to someone I could speak with or if they’d followed up with me to make sure they received the necessary paperwork. When I found out that my daughter’s appointment was canceled today- she’s been really needing to speak with a therapist- I immediately contacted another provider and was able to speak to someone immediately, confirm coverage and schedule her first appointment without any problems. I do not recommend Positive Change Counseling Center due to their lack of empathy for patients who really need to be seen and their unnecessarily complicated scheduling system.

I was looking for counseling in San Diego when I encountered Positive Change Counseling. I was intrigued to see the experience of their counselors and therapists and their depth of experience with treating anxiety, depression, PTSD, and trauma among other things. Their staff was very helpful from my first call and they got me in quickly while also taking my insurance. It was very helpful and I continue to enjoy my experience there. If you need a therapist or counselor in San Diego, I highly recommend them.
