I usually prepare our taxes on my own, but as I was busy this year, I decided to go with Lively and Bair CPAs. We had a consultation about our tax preparations and documents. It was a pretty basic return as we do not own a big business or had any complicated paperwork. They let me know at the consultation that because it was a pretty standard return, they gave us a quote of around $300 and that it may be cheaper to go to a less specialized tax preparer. I decided to continue as I thought for their specialty, I would say it was fair so I didn't mind paying for a little more. Invoice then comes out to $750, more than double the estimated quote. We went over every single document I brought during the consultation so there were no surprises and they agreed it was pretty simple and standard, so I don't see why the quote would end up over double in price.

UPDATE: We spoke on the phone. I have done my taxes myself every year with my CA return not being complicated as we are military and it's just CA giving our taxes back as we serve in a different state. Had I known that it would cost an extra $450 for just the state taxes, I wouldn't have proceeded. They expressed that a federal and state tax return would never be as low as $300. So the ball was dropped somewhere and we will chalk it up to miscommunication. I will stand by that the review is stll justified after communicating and gathering the facts as $300 to $750 is an expensive mistake and I don't go to a business for quotes on HALF the work, I wanted a quote for all of it. I do appreciate the accountability during the call though. Overall, their work was good and I appreciated and paid them for it, but if you choose to do your business here, make sure during the consultation that the quote is for all the work. Perhaps get it on paper. Added a star for accountability and professionalism.
